DeepDAO Releases API for Ecosystem, Organizations, and People Data
Our beta API is completely free; reach out for early access * Governance insights: total treasury rose from $9.1B to $12.5B, 3000 proposals were created * And much more in our monthly publication
Over the past few months, incoming demand for data about DAOs has been rising. The DAOs, members of the DAO ecosystem, tool teams, and the general crypto audience has been joined by the mainstream media, with many of the largest publications in the world suddenly paying attention. Our analysts and researchers have provided insights to some of the biggest news sources in the old world, such as the New York Times, Forbes, Reuters, and others, in addition to the native crypto media such as CoinTelegraph, Decrypt, and many more.
What are the mainstream journalists looking for? Impressively everything, both the big picture and the details. One reporter got on a call with our staff for almost two hours, going over each of the metrics listed on DeepDAO, putting the effort to climb the steep learning curve for understanding each number, what it means, and how we collect the data and analyze it. A researcher for a top U.S. consulting firm did the same. Another reporter sent detailed questions in a back and forth email correspondence and wanted clarifications. Yet another writer was curious about scams in DAOs, and over a lengthy conversation was converted, we hope, to the aliveness of blockchain governance and the direct view we now have into the inner workings and the power dynamics of large DAO type organizations.
To increase our offering of dashboards providing DAO data we are releasing our API in beta for individuals and organizations. Please check our first batch of endpoints here.
The DeepDAO API is completely free. Reach out to us at info@deepdao.io to get an early access API key and start integrating DAO data directly into your app.
Ecosystem Insights
March was a busy month in the governance ecosystem. 2,984 proposals were created, and no less than 186,754 people voted. Just like it is with other large collections of groups, the issues concerting DAOs ranged from the very serious to the absolutely mundane.
Still in their early phase, DAOs aim to enhance their level of performance, as they believe that at times they operate inefficiently. This is reflected in, for example, insufficient DAO-wide coordination, which makes it difficult to execute time-sensitive tasks. Towards the end of February, Meta Cartel DAO discussed the creation of a sub-DAO with shared control of its Gnosis Safe, in order to execute faster swaps on behalf of the DAO, with less coordination overhead.
The need for efficiency and speed is a trend we’ve been seeing in several other DAOs, and there are a few DAO tools aiming to solve this, such as CollabLand, a tool that helps set-up soft governance using tokens on Discord, or POAP, which helps in marking attendance (for use cases like the attendees of a community call).
Just like any other startup, or established companies, DAOs are having trouble recruiting team members for certain positions, due to the challenge of finding candidates with the interest and the passion required for the crypto ecosystem. This has happened, surprisingly, to one of the leading DAOs, MakerDAO: the DAO posted about its struggles to implement efficient HR procedures through their core unit, suggesting hiring internal candidates with the appropriate background.
The length of voting time on proposals is in debate as well. DAOs contemplate the optimal time required to achieve meaningful outcomes, as experimented by the Botto Project and Lido Finance. A functioning organizational structure is not easy to achieve but might be attained by the appointment of organizational-level leaders. This is aimed to generate order, but at the same time undermines the idea of a DAO, which is not to be organized in a classical top-down corporate hierarchy.
Technical problems, in the form of hackers and bugs, are part of Web3 organizations’ reality as well. Towards the end of February, it was reported that Superlative Secret Society DAO got scammed, leading to a loss of 12.5 ETH, while in the same week a rare bug at Ribbon Finance's auction resulted in very few bids and total earnings of $196,882 - a discrepancy of $363,170 from the anticipated $560,052.
While not entirely detached from worldly affairs, DAOs including IBC DAO and GoldmanDAO manage risks and are raising money to aid those affected by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Furthermore, DAOs try to gain legitimacy in the traditional business world through the authorization of legal consulting services or political advisors, to promote the adoption of blockchain tech among local and state governments and support community democratization.
As in the case of ATX DAO which proposed providing a membership track for political consultants, and of Buzzed Bear Hideout, which proposed authorizing legal consulting services in the US to increase the value of the brand and allow the DAO to sign contracts. Kingpindao, too, has voted to proceed in the establishment of the a legal entity.
DeepDAO Lists 15 Solana DAOs
DeepDAO is proud to announce the entry of 15 Solana DAOs into our platform. This listing is the most extensive inclusion of non-Ethereum DAOs on our system. Some of the largest DAOs added were Mango, with $689.9M treasury, and UXDProtocol, with $680.4M. Both organizations are at the top 5 rankings on DeepDAO’s Organizations dashboard. The listed organizations’ treasuries totaled $1.3B, bringing the ecosystem total treasury to $12.5B. The total number of votes in the listed Solana DAOs is 5000, and nearly 600 proposals - all using the SPL governance framework.
Before Solana’s listings, all the searchable DAOs on DeepDAO’s platform used Ethereum, L2s, or off-chain systems for their governance and treasuries. With Solana’s DAOs entry, it is easier to see the growth of the DAO movement and its path towards a multi-chain ecosystem.
